Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is intended as a continuation of Introduction to Keyboard MUSI2002 and builds on the knowledge and skills learnt in that course. Students will play simple pieces and accompaniments in a range of different styles for songs suited to the primary school context. The range of chord patterns and playing techniques will be extended to suit the requirements of content and students' abilities.

COURSE RATIONALE

This course focuses on a Primary School Key Learning Area (KLA) and provides students with the knowledge and skills to effectively use the keyboard to accompany singing and dancing in the primary classroom. Students become familiar with the concepts of duration, pitch, tone colour, structure and dynamics as well as gaining confidence in the use of a range of playing methods.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On successfully completing MUSI2015 the student will be able to:

  • Extend the range of chords used in accompaniments
  • Extend the range of playing styles used in accompaniments
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of music concepts including beat, rhythm, chords and notation
  • To use material that is rhythmically more challenging

COURSE CONTENT

  • An extension of chords previously used
  • Playing in a range of keys
  • Rhythmic difficulty of material to increase sequentially
  • Extended range of accompaniment patterns using right and left hand techniques

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE

AART1010

There will be an assumed knowledge and skill level equivalent to the requirements of Introduction to Keyboard MUSI2002.

COURSE EVALUATIONS

Student evaluations are undertaken at the end of each semester. The Faculty uses The University of Newcastle SES program for academic subjects at the end of every Semester. All staff involved consult with the Dean to examine their own results and undertake the Deans recommendations in the light of these results. An internal review and evaluation of the subject's operation will be carried out at the completion of its first semester of offering.
